For this property, I chose a Mediterranean style because it fit with the atmosphere of the community and the owners cherished memories of travel in Italy. We had to work with the existing hardscape in the back yard so we softened it with Mediterranean plant materials. The grass area was necessary for the dogs to play, but the area was shaded and grass didn’t grow well. We selected artificial turf instead, which produced a beautiful result. In the front, we removed the grass altogether and replaced it with drought-tolerant plants and a fountain. To feature the entrance, we added a curving stone pathway and redesigned the porch with stacked stone curving steps, which make an inviting statement that sets the tone for the entire property.

For the interior, we used stone to create a wine bar and fireplace. The color in the stone lent itself to more color throughout the home. The owners were apprehensive at first, being accustomed to neutral colors, but they decided to trust my suggestion. I chose ochre, red, and green which were already present in their fabric and artwork. The result was stunning and the owners were thrilled with the added colors.
