This is a 1977 tract home that had a dated design and limited storage. We opted for a comprehensive remodel but didn’t want a style that didn’t fit with the neighborhood. We landed on a Cape Cod style, with fresh colors, shutters, and millwork. One way I created storage was to turn the pantry closet into a built-in piece for china that looked more like furniture than a closet, and installed pull-out cabinets with stainless steel racks on either side of the refrigerator.

For the yard, the owners wanted a pool, jacuzzi, fireplace, grill, and bar with seating, which was a tall order with a yard that is shallow and an irregular shape with strong diagonal lines. I countered this with strong perpendicular structures and destinations that stopped the eye, and then created an organically shaped pool flanked with plant material to enhance the yard's composition. Because of a large elevation change where the pool needed to go, I placed the jacuzzi apart from the pool and created a secluded retreat off of the master bedroom.

In spite of the limited space, this yard became a peaceful, secluded oasis that extends the living space of the home.
